Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) has negotiated a deal to air the world championship chess matches starting this weekend that will pit Norwegian chess star Magnus Carlsen against Vishy Anand of India. The much-hyped tournament will play out on Anand’s home turf in Chennai, India through November.
“It was a complicated negotiating process with various players in India, but we came to terms in the end,” said Runar Østmo, head of sports rights in NRK.
Rune Haug, head of sports coverage for NRK, admitted that “it’s perhaps a bit crazy” to air 100 hours of chess live on Norway’s largest TV channel, “but we think Norwegians want to finally be able to follow Magnus Carlsen’s outstanding presentation closely.”
The first game is set for November 9, with the tournament set to run through November 26.
