Local officials and not least home- and vehicle owners were assessing the damage caused over the weekend by the latest severe storm to slam into Nordland County. Damage estimates were hitting tens of millions of kroner, not least in Vesterålen.
Sture Pedersen, mayor of Bø in Vesterålen, reported how the storm raged all night, damaging parked cars, infracture and buildings and disrupting both airline and vehicular traffic. Strong winds tore the roof off several structures, vehicles were tossed upside down and even the molo, a stone breakwater, at Steinesjøen was all but destroyed when strong winds and seas loosened the stones forming it.
“It was quite incredible what happened,” Pedersen told state broadcaster NRK. “The 20-year-old molo was really torn apart.”
Several cars parked at the airport in Bodø were damaged by loose items flying through the air. The rear window of an Audi, for example, was shattered. There were, however, no reports of injuries.
