Charges expanded against royal son

Police in Oslo confirmed Friday that they’ve expanded the criminal charges against Marius Borg Høiby, son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. He’s already charged with assaulting a female partner and trashing her home, and now he’s also accused of making threats and stealing a scooter.

His latest victim underwent lengthy police questioning this week, as have two earlier girlfriends who claim he was also violent against them. The addition of threats to the main charges came after police examined audio of a telephone call Høiby made to his latest victim the day after the attacks he has linked to his use of cocaine and consumption of alcohol.

It’s all created a new scandal for Norway’s royal family set off by the now-27-year-old Høiby who’s part of the royal family and often been protected and defended by his mother but who’s also sought publicity himself.

Høiby himself still hasn’t been formally questioned, three weeks after his rampage at his latest girlfriend’s apartment in Oslo’s Frogner district. Høiby initially refused to be questioned, on the advice of his attorney, who wasn’t available to accompany him to questioning this week.

Police reported Friday that Høiby was also accused on August 7 of stealing a scooter, using it and then remaining in possession of stolen goods. State broadcaster NRK reported that new charges stem from an earlier incident and involve another plaintiff.
