State meteorologists warned that a new storm with waves as high as 12 meters (nearly 40 feet) would ram the coast of Northern Norway on Tuesday. Helgeland, between Bodø and Bronnøysund, was due to be hit hardest.
Strong winds and as much as 100mm of rain were also expected as the storm moved in from Iceland.
“This is a low pressure system lying northeast of Iceland that’s developing into a storm center during the night,” state meteorologist Eirik Samuelsen told state broadcaster NRK. “The storm is heading for Nordland, with the strongest winds south of the center.” That was likely around Sandnessjøen and Mo i Rana.
Experts were expecting 100mm of rain and winds gusting up to 40 meters per second. The storm was due to peak around midday. Ferries were expected to have to cancel trips out to the islands along the Helgelands coast.
