Storms, snow stranded travelers

Volunteers from the Red Cross helped dig out a train from Oslo after it rolled right into massive snowdrifts from an avalanche while on its way to Bergen over the weekend.

Everyone on board had to spend the night stuck in the snow even though they weren’t far from the Upsete Station. Snowstorms throughout the weekend disrupted most all other forms of traffic as well, and several mountain passes were closed.

More than 100 people were on the train when it became snowbound. The train finally arrived in Bergen on Sunday, 18 hours after leaving Oslo on Saturday.

The busy and popular train line, Bergensbanen, was shut down and trains delayed, right in the midst of Norway’s annual winter holiday weeks in which schools are closed and many families and children head to the mountains for skiing. They’d all been advised to stay home until the storm passed.
