New storm warnings for the weekend

Southern Norway was due to get battered again by a severe winter storm this weekend, with state meteorologists posting “Code Orange” alerts for several areas and warning: “This is not the weekend for a trip to the mountains in Southern Norway.”

Strong winds and lots of rain, sleet and snow at high elevations can make the storm almost as powerful as the extreme weather system called Gyda, that rammed the west coast in mid-January. Rogaland and the area around Bergen can be hit particularly hard, but the entire area south of the Stad Peninsula was at risk.

Residents were warned of trees being blown down, power failures, cancelled ferries and difficult driving conditions. They were also warned to stay away from waterfront areas because of powerful waves that can sweep people out to sea.

State meteorologist Unni Nilssen predicted the weather would be worst on Sunday, and urged people to stay indoors. “There can be blizzards and slippery roads, and I would not advise driving at all on Sunday.”
