Crisis centers hope for more support

Members of the royal family including Crown Princess Mette-Marit have visited crisis centers for women subjected to domestic violence. Now the crown princess’ own son has admitted to inflicting violence against a girlfriend, and the crisis centers hope that can lead to even more royal support for their work.

“Violence in close relationships hits all levels of society,” Ane Fossum, leader of Norway’s Crisis Center Secretariat, told state broadcaster NRK after the crown princess’ 27-year-old son from a former relationship publicly apologized for assaulting his girlfriend and trashing her home last weekend.

Fossum hopes the crown princess and other members of the royal family will strengthen their engagement in efforts to halt violence within relationships and against women. “I hope Crown Princess Mette-Marit can get this through this uncomfortable situation for her, and help continue the campaign against violence,” Fossum said. “This is something that affects us all, also the royal family.”
