Norway’s state meteorological institute sent out new warnings on Friday that another round of storms was sweeping over the Norwegian Sea and likely to ram the northwest coast and Vestfjorden off Bodø.
A strong low-pressure system was extending across the Norwegian Sea from the coast of Nordland County to eastern Greenland, the institute reported Friday afternoon.
“On this side of the storm system, we’ll get very powerful southerly and southwesterly winds,” meteorologist Magnus Ovhed of Værvarslinga for Nord Norge told state broadcaster NRK. He said that the winds can “come up to full storm around the Vestfjord” by late Friday afternoon.
He predicted winds from the west Friday evening with new cold air that was likely to result in snowstorms. The wind and snow was expected to continue into Saturday.
The Helgeland coast and mountains of Saltfjellet were also due for stormy weather, along with snow and hail.
The scenic areas of Lofoten and Vesterålen, popular with tourists, were hit by storms earlier in the week and more would be rolling in there as well, according to the meteorological institute.
Strong storms last week resulted in millions of kroner worth of property damage farther south in Norway, with some areas in Trøndelag also losing power for days on end. It’s since been restored and those areas weren’t expected to be hit again in the new round of autumn storms.
